元々は、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドとアンディ・ウォーホルの関係や、 パティ・スミスと ロバート・メイプルソープの関係だとかに興味を持ち始めて、その後デトロイト出身の イギー＆ザ・ストゥージズやMC5に辿り着いていったんです。最初はカバーバンドだった MC5が、65年ぐらいに THE WHOのステージを観て衝撃を受けて、ラウドでハイエナジーな音に方向転換したり、ジョン・シンクレアと政治活動的なムーブメントを起こしていたことにも興味があったので、だったら一度デトロイトに行ってみたいなと。
そうですね。当時のカウンターカルチャーというか、若者のエナジーが発散されたひとつの形だと思うんです。音楽の元には、アートや政治が絡んでいるんだな、と。 デストロイ・オール・モンスターズのメンバーの マイク・ケリーが後の現代アートにも関わっていったようにね。2004年、DTK/MC5がサマー・ソニックで来日したときに、初めてメンバーと会うことができて、それでベースのマイケル・デイビスの奥さんから写真家の スー・リンスキーを紹介してもらい、2006年に青山の「ZAMIANG」で彼女の作品展と、70年代に彼女が撮り溜めたデストロイ・オール・モンスターズの写真集を手掛けることになったんです。その関係から、 ナイアガラとも繋がって、2007年には彼女とのコラボレーションや、HYSTERIC渋谷店でナイアガラの作品展を企画することになったんです。同時期に、HYSTERICのシーズンカタログをどこで撮ろうかと考えていて、最初はデトロイトは危険が多すぎるということで却下され、テスト的にNYのコニーアイランドで撮影したのが2007 AWのカタログでした。その撮影後、フジロック2007にイギー＆ザ・ストゥージズが来日して、ナイアガラの紹介でメンバーと会うことができて、その時にギタリストの ロン・アッシュトンがアナーバーの自宅に誘ってくれて、それが初めてデトロイトに行くきっかけになったんです。一番最初は、カメラマンのWATARUと一緒にデトロイトのナイアガラやロンの家を訪ねて、彼らのアーカイブを見せてもらったんです。それと同時に、デトロイトの街をいろいろとロケハンしてみたんだけど。

すごく衝撃的だった。街がある時代からそのまま止まってしまっているというか。ダウンタウンは完全にゴーストタウン化していて、1920年代から50年代に建てられたきれいな建物がそのまま廃墟になっていた。ベースボールスタジアムから教会までもが廃墟になっていて、昼間ですら人気を感じない。それを見て、こんなフォトジェニックな街はないと思って、撮影意欲が沸いたんです。それで、デトロイトで撮影に行くメンバーも、コニーアイランドの時と同じ面子で行くことに決めて、それから２シーズン続けて撮影しました。その後は現地で知り合った仲間のコネクションで “DETROIT DERBY GIRLS”の連中たちと撮影を行ったり、 “THEATRE BIZARRE”（注：地元のアーティスト数名がすべてDIYで建てた小さな屋外映画館とアトラクションスペース）のアーティスト集団と撮影をすることに繋がっていったんです。
地元の人たちが受け入れてくれた、というか。当初は、アメリカ人の知り合いたちからは「デトロイトで撮影は危険すぎる」と止められたんですけど、いざ行ってみたら、みんな協力的で、いいコネクションが広がりました。
ジャック・ホワイトとフォトセッションできたのも、ある雑誌のインタビューで彼と会った時にそれらのカタログを見せることができ、彼もすごく興味を持ってくれたのがきっかけでした。
2004年のMC5のメンバーとの出会いから点と点が繋がって、コネクションが広がっていって、まさにHYSTERIC D.C.（DETROIT CONNECTION）な感じです。計5回のデトロイトの旅の途中、パティ・スミスの故夫、ソニック・スミスの墓参りもできたし、今となっては思い入れ深い場所です。
I was interested in the relationship between Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol, Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe in the beginning. Then I finally found out Iggy and The Stooges and MC5 who were the bands from Detroit city. In about 1965, MC5 was just a cover band, but they were shocked to watch the staging of THE WHO; then they changed their performing attitude to loud and high-energy style. At the same time, they stirred political activities and movements with John Sinclair. Of course, I was interested in their activities as well; therefore, I became more and more interested in visiting Detroit by myself.

Yes, it’s very important influence in the counterculture of the 60’s in America, it’s youthful expectations and icon for young people. Then I realized that the music was influenced by art and politic. As you know, Mike Kelly who’s the member of Destroy All Monsters (DTK) later became important to the modern art scenes.
In 2004, I could finally meet the member of DTK/MC5 to have come on Summer Sonic festival in Japan. Then the wife of Michael Davis, who was base player in the band, introduced me the photographer, Sue Rynski. In 2006, we held her first photo exhibition at ZAMIANG in Aoyama and published the photo book together, which featured her documentation of Destroy All Monsters in the 70’s. After these projects, we were naturally related to Niagara who formed D.A.M. with Mike Kelly, and then we finally collaborated with Niagara and planned her exhibition at HYSTERIC GLAMOUR Shibuya store in 2007. And we were planning where we should go for shooting of HYSTERIC GLAMOUR seasonal look book and catalog for 2007 AW. Of course, I wanted to go Detroit, but my American friends rejected it because it’s still too risky to visit there. Then we made a test ourselves to go the Coney Island in New York. After we finished our shooting in New York, the band Iggy and The Stooges came to Fuji-Rock festival in 2007, I was able to meet up the members on referral from Niagara, then Ron Ashton who is the guitarist invited me to his home in Ann Arbor (State of Michigan), that’s how I visit to Detroit first time. I went to Detroit with WATARU who wasmy favorite photographer on this trip; we visited to Niagara’s, Ron’s home and checked their all archives, also did location scout of all over the Detroit.
It’s just shocking to me. The city stopped since proceeding era, the downtown became completely ghost town, the building built in 20’s – 50’s fell into ruin… the baseball stadium to the church, it’s an almost-deserted town. But that’s very unique and photogenic to us; the city captured our heart lots and got motivated to shoot in Detroit. Then we made our decision to shoot next seasonal catalog in Detroit, we shot at there two-seasons straight. While we were in Detroit, we created variety of local contacts. Those new relationships made us to be able to collaborate with the band “DETORIT DERBY GIRLS” and artist’s collective “THEATRE BIZARRE” for our shooting.

We are proud of these books that locally manufactured; the local Detroit creators accepted our activity and vision. Our American friend always gave us an advice not to shoot in Detroit, but it actually made us to contact with kindly people and great relationships in Detroit. The reason why I could work with Jack White was to gift him this book when we did the interview for the magazine together.
When I met MC5 in 2004, the dots were connected between Detroit and Tokyo. At that very moment it became HYSTERIC D.C. (DETROIT CONNECTION). Now I have been to Detroit five times, I could pay respect at gravesite of Sonic Smith who is Patti Smith’s late husband. I have a special fondness for the Detroit strongly in the now.

Born in 1962. In 1984, started HYSTERIC GLAMOUR at the age of 21. He is the pioneer of mixing culture, Rock & Art, and Fashion in Japan. From 2013 AW, launched apparel collection with legendary gentleman’s magazine “PALYBOY” which just celebrates 60th anniversary.
